Incredibly popular as winter gifts, Amaryllis, also known as Hippeastrum, are spectacular flowering bulbs that are a real treat to grow, giving you stunning, exotic flowers in the middle of winter! So appropriately named, 'Christmas Star' flowers with huge, bright red trumpets that have a spectacular starburst pattern in the centre, perfect for the festive season. Amaryllis are so much fun to grow and it's always exciting to see how many flowers they'll produce. They will often produce more than one stem, with each one carrying up to six flowers. That's an incredibly impressive display! Our indoor bulb kit makes a wonderful gift, or you could just treat yourself. It's always fun to grow one of your own and give another as a present and then compete for the tallest plant with the most flowers! All you need to do is plant it around 8 weeks before you'd like it to flower, with the top third of the bulb above the compost, always keeping it moist. Your Amaryllis will grow up to 60cm (2ft) tall. Water regularly, keeping the compost moist. Grow in a bright, warm spot, ideally above 20°C (68°F). Feed regularly to encourage larger flowers, tomato food is perfect! Keep your Amaryllis for the next year! After flowering, cut the stems down to a few centimetres above the bulb, but leave the leaves in place. Continue to water and feed throughout the year until autumn, then move the plant to a dark place and stop watering, letting the leaves die off. In November, bring you Amaryllis back into the light and begin watering and feeding again. New leaves and flower stems will grow, and as the bulb has been well fed, it should flower even better than the previous year.
